Hiya, I’m Kami!

I’m a video editor from Dallas, Texas, with experience using Adobe software (Premiere Pro, After Effects, and Photoshop), DaVinci Resolve, and Avid Media Composer. I’ve been editing for 18 years and graduated from the University of North Texas with a B.A. in Converged Broadcast Media in 2021.

I began learning how to edit at 10-years-old on the #1 fan-favorite editing software of choice: Windows Movie Maker. Since then, I’ve been in love with filmmaking and crafting stories. From broadcasting news to my middle school to editing films with friends in high school, I jumped onto any project I could as a kid.

As an adult, I shifted from being a news producer to a full-time film editor, where I discovered that my love wasn’t just for the stories themselves, but also for the individuals and communities behind them.

Truth be told, I actually have C-PTSD, which causes me to see and feel things very differently than most.

For every video I touch, I consider the families and loved ones of everyone involved. I research every bit I can to ensure the piece is respectful and can touch the hearts of everyone involved, no matter how many years pass.

My Approach

I adjust my editing process to match the story being told. In cases of narrative scriptwriting or interviews, I map out the story into three parts, with notes about what emotions the audience is intended to feel. Every cut is intentional, and every beat should drive the story forward.

Documentaries

Before the camera turns on, I begin researching all involved individuals and organizations. Who is this documentary for or about? How will this impact their communities? How would their family and loved ones feel watching this? Am I honoring everyone involved?

Campaigns

In cases of campaigns or promotional materials, I always consider the company’s or organization’s guidelines, vision, and goals. What audiences are we aiming to reach? What do we hope this video will accomplish down the line?
